A panel titled “The Republic and Women’s Political Representation” was held at the Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMU) Central Library.

At the panel, Prof. Dr. Nuray Ertürk Keskin from the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences and Dr. Mehmet Aydın from the Faculty of Education participated as speakers.

Evaluating the position of women in national and local politics in Türkiye through statistical data, Prof. Dr. Nuray Ertürk Keskin emphasized the importance of empowering women politically. Drawing on the 2025 data from the World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap Index, Keskin identified barriers to women’s political representation and outlined recommendations to overcome them. She also noted that it is important not only for women to participate in politics but also for them to develop demands and programs related to public policies.

The other panel speaker, Dr. Mehmet Aydın, provided a general evaluation of the place of women in Turkish history and society and spoke about Ayşe Meliha Ulaş, the first female member of parliament from Samsun.

At the panel, organized following 8 March International Women’s Day, discussions focused on women who made history with their achievements, served as political representatives, and played active roles during the national struggle period.

The event, organized with the support of the Women and Family Studies Application and Research Center, concluded with the presentation of certificates of appreciation and a commemorative photo session.
