Dr. Ergün’s TÜBİTAK-Funded Project Explores Molecular Mechanisms of Enzalutamide Resistance

A project led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sercan Ergün of the Department of Medical Biology at Ondokuz Mayıs University’s (OMU) Faculty of Medicine has been selected for funding under the TÜBİTAK 1001 Scientific and Technological Research Projects Funding Programme.

The project, titled “Transcriptomic Analysis of the Development of Enzalutamide Resistance in Metastatic Castration-Resistant Prostate Cancer and Its Stepwise Inhibition,” will investigate the early stages of resistance to enzalutamide, a treatment widely used for metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC), through transcriptomic analyses based on mRNA sequencing.

The research aims to identify molecular changes that emerge during the early stages of treatment resistance and determine how suppressing overexpressed genes with inhibitors may affect treatment efficacy.

The research team includes Prof. Dr. Sezgin Güneş and Dr. Neslihan Hekim from OMU’s Department of Medical Biology, as well as Prof. Dr. Ferda Arı from Bursa Uludağ University.

The experimental studies will be conducted in collaboration between OMU’s Department of Medical Biology and the Molecular Cancer Research Laboratory at Bursa Uludağ University (BUMKAL). The findings are expected to contribute to the identification of early biomarkers that may help predict the development of treatment resistance in prostate cancer.

Postdoctoral researchers Senanur Aslan and Dilbeste Demir Yeşilyurt from OMU’s Department of Medical Biology, together with Oğuzhan Akgün from the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Bursa Uludağ University, will also take part in the project. Through their involvement, they will gain advanced experience in transcriptomic analysis and bioinformatics, contributing to the development of highly skilled researchers in these fields.
