Five Innovative Projects by OMU Researchers Receive TÜBİTAK 1001 Funding

Five projects developed by researchers at Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMU) have been selected for funding under the TÜBİTAK 1001 Scientific and Technological Research Projects Funding Programme, according to the results of the first application period of 2026.

The scientific evaluation process was conducted by the Research Support Programs Directorate (ARDEB) of the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Türkiye (TÜBİTAK). The supported OMU projects span dentistry, physics, agriculture, social sciences, and medical genetics.

Multidisciplinary Research from Dentistry to Medical Genetics

Led by academics from different faculties, the projects support OMU’s research-university vision through innovative, solution-oriented approaches to significant scientific and societal challenges.

Prof. Dr. Cangül Keskin of the Department of Endodontics at the Faculty of Dentistry will lead the project titled “Validation of a Micro-Computed Tomography-Based Method for Distinguishing True Fusion from Pseudofusion in Maxillary Second Molar Roots.”

The study aims to introduce an innovative method that may contribute to more accurate diagnosis and treatment planning in endodontics.

Prof. Dr. Emin Öztekin of the Department of Physics at the Faculty of Science will conduct the project titled “Development of a Molecular Integral Calculator Using Slater-Type Orbitals (STOLAB).”

The project will develop a significant software infrastructure for fundamental science and molecular computation.

Prof. Dr. Hüsrev Mennan of the Department of Plant Protection at the Faculty of Agriculture will lead the project titled “Molecular and Phenotypic Investigation of Weed Resistance to Cyclohexanedione Herbicides in Provisia Rice-Growing Areas.”

Focusing on agricultural productivity and sustainability, the study seeks to generate practical solutions for managing herbicide resistance in rice cultivation.

Prof. Dr. İbrahim Turan of the Department of Philosophy and Religious Sciences at the Faculty of Theology will conduct the project titled “Multidimensional Prediction of the Propensity for Violence among High School Students within the Framework of Ecological Systems Theory.”

The research aims to provide new insights into the individual, social, and environmental factors associated with violent tendencies among adolescents.

Dr. Medine Karadağ Alpaslan, a research assistant in the Department of Medical Genetics at the Faculty of Medicine, will lead the project titled “Functional and Mechanistic Analysis of the p.Tyr205His Variant in CARD14-Mediated Psoriatic Phenotypes.”

The study aims to clarify the cellular and genetic mechanisms associated with the variant and contribute to a better understanding of CARD14-mediated psoriatic conditions.

Together, the five TÜBİTAK-supported projects demonstrate the breadth of the researchers’ expertise and are expected to generate valuable scientific outcomes across health, natural sciences, agriculture, and social sciences.
