OMU trains international students in real-world disaster preparedness scenarios in Samsun
SAMSUN – Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMU) organized a “Basic Disaster Awareness Training” program to raise international students' awareness of disasters. Within the program, students received practical instruction on pre-disaster preparedness, appropriate behavior during disasters, and basic response methods.
The training sessions were carried out within the scope of the protocol signed between the Council of Higher Education (YÖK) and the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) under the Ministry of Interior, and within the framework of Türkiye Scholarships coordinated by the Presidency for Turks Abroad and Related Communities (YTB). The training was held at Vezirsuyu Nature Park and Şahinkaya Canyon in the Vezirköprü district. The program, attended by many students from different countries, addressed the concept of a culture of safe living.
Multi-stakeholder collaboration
The program, hosted by OMU, was supported by the AFAD Samsun Provincial Directorate, the OMU Disaster Education and Management Application and Research Center, the Cemre Student Community, and OMU Search and Rescue teams. The training aimed to improve students’ ability to act correctly and swiftly in disaster situations.
Theoretical and practical training
During training sessions led by experts, the importance of pre-disaster preparedness processes was emphasized, while appropriate behaviors to adopt during disasters were demonstrated in practice. Participants were provided with fundamental information on ensuring their personal safety in emergency situations and supporting those around them.
Contribution to the adaptation process
In addition to increasing disaster awareness, the training program also contributed to the adaptation of international students to the social and cultural structure of Samsun. Authorities emphasized the importance of disseminating disaster awareness, noting that similar training programs will continue to be organized for different groups.
