OMU expands disaster awareness and preparedness training across campuses
SAMSUN – Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMU) has launched a comprehensive training program aimed at minimizing disaster risks across its campuses and raising awareness among students and personnel. Implemented within the framework of the cooperation protocol signed between the Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD) of the Ministry of Interior and the Council of Higher Education (YÖK), the training programs are being intensively carried out in all units across the university’s central and district campuses.
Expert teams support the training programs
The programs, coordinated by the OMU Disaster Education and Management Application and Research Center and the Samsun Provincial Directorate of Disaster and Emergency Management, are actively supported by AFAD expert trainers, OMU Search and Rescue (OMUAK) teams, and the Cemre Student Community.
AFAD–YÖK protocol reflected in practice
The cooperation protocol signed between AFAD and YÖK on March 4, 2026, which forms the basis of the training program, aims to increase disaster awareness in higher education institutions, reduce disaster risks, and strengthen the culture of volunteerism.
The protocol also covers the principles and procedures regarding cooperation in academic and technical activities, strengthening universities’ disaster preparedness capacities, and the training and accreditation of search and rescue teams to be established within these institutions.
The theoretical and practical training sessions carried out not only on the university’s central campus but also in educational units located in district campuses aim to enhance the disaster management capabilities of all campus stakeholders.
