Music bridges cultures: International students perform Turkish folk songs at OMU concert
A choir composed of international postgraduate students at Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMU) performed a concert featuring popular Turkish folk songs.
The choir was formed as part of the project titled “Intercultural Interaction and Linguistic Adaptation through Folk Music–Centered Choir Studies,” prepared in cooperation with the OMU Graduate School and the OMU State Conservatory and supported by the Scientific Research Projects (BAP) Coordination Unit. The project brought together international students studying at OMU from different countries.
Working under the direction of Lecturer Oğuz Yılmaz from the State Conservatory, Department of Turkish Music, Division of Turkish Folk Music, the choir completed a 16-week rehearsal period before taking the stage at the OMU Atatürk Congress and Culture Center. During the concert, the choir performed well-known pieces such as “Burçak Tarlası,” “Şu Dalma’dan Geçtin mi,” “Üsküdar’a Giderken,” “Çemberimde Gül Oya,” “Başındaki Yazmayı,” “Sendeki Kaşlar,” and “Nemrudun Kızı,” presenting both solo and ensemble performances.
In the final part of the program, the choir performed “Atabarı,” a folk dance tune from the Artvin region, and the Black Sea melody “Cilveloy.”
The concert featured Prof. Dr. Can Karahan and Prof. Dr. Eyüp Selim Köksal on bağlama, Prof. Dr. Deniz Ekinci on accordion, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Gültekin Şener on kabak kemane, Erkan Karabatak on percussion, Serhat Çelikel on clarinet, and Çetin Buğrahan on guitar.
At the end of the program, certificates of appreciation were presented to the academics who contributed to the project. The concert was attended by OMU Graduate School Director Prof. Dr. Faik Ahmet Sesli, along with academics and students.
