Rector Prof. Dr. Fatma Aydın issues message for 19 May Commemoration of Atatürk, Youth and Sports Day

We proudly and enthusiastically celebrate the 107th anniversary of 19 May 1919, the starting point of the struggle that led to the foundation of the Republic of Türkiye. Societies that interpret the past not merely through the flow of time but through cause-and-effect relationships and deep awareness can build a strong future grounded in reality. In this respect, our historical consciousness is the most valuable source of inspiration that nourishes our understanding of a “future rooted in the past.”

There are special turning points in the biographies of cities that give them spirit and transform land into homeland. When Samsun is mentioned, the first thing that comes to mind is that it is the city where the torch of independence was lit and the War of Independence began. While beginning Nutuk (The Speech) with this blessed journey, Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk eternally honored the city of the first step and this sacred beginning by pointing to “19 May” when asked about his birthday.

Our university, which chose the date marking the beginning of the National Struggle as its name, fulfills its academic responsibilities with the awareness of this exceptional heritage and pride. Passing on the values and the spirit of the Republic inherited from the honorable pages of our past to new generations lies at the heart of our understanding of duty.

Atatürk dedicated this meaningful day, on which the fate of our country and nation changed, to the youth with the spirit of a national holiday and entrusted them with the responsibility of preserving and sustaining the Republic. Every achievement our state has made over the past 107 years further strengthens our belief and hope for a brighter future.

With these feelings and thoughts, I respectfully and gratefully commemorate, especially Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and his comrades-in-arms, all our beloved martyrs and the heroes of our National Struggle who sacrificed their lives for this homeland. I sincerely celebrate the Commemoration of Atatürk, Youth and Sports Day of all our youth and our esteemed nation.
