Rector Ünal: “We Want to Improve University-Industry Collaboration”

A “Consultation Meeting for Sectoral Cooperation” was held at Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMU) to discuss what needs to be done for the development of industry and R&D infrastructure in Samsun and to boost university-industry cooperation.

Leading experts in industry and academicians participated in the meeting in order to open up a new horizon for the industry, which is one of the strong areas of Samsun. In the meeting, which is in the form of brainstorming without being tied to a specific agenda, new ideas were generated and the areas of cooperation between the university and the industry were discussed. The meeting chaired by Rector Prof. Dr. Yavuz Ünal was very fruitful.

The meeting was held at the Rector’s Office with the participation of Vice Rectors Prof. Dr. Fehmi Yazici, Prof. Dr. Cengiz Batuk, Prof. Dr. Recep Sancak, Head of Samsun Chamber of Commerce and Industry Salih Zeki Murzioğlu,  Chairman of Samsun Chamber of Commerce and Industry Sinan Çakır, Samsun MUSIAD Chairman Atty. Hasan Tahsin Şengül, Provincial Director of Industry Selahattin Altınsoy, Deputy Secretary General of Metropolitan Municipality Şenol Yıldız, Head of IT Department of Metropolitan Municipality Mehmet Sami Çapacıoğlu, General Manager of SAMPA Automative Inc. Bülent Üstündağ, Samsun Yurt Defense Industry and Trade Inc. General Manager Utku Aral, Chairman of MEDİKÜM Op. Dr. Ahmet Aydemir, OMÜ TTO Coordinator Asst. Prof. Mustafa Mortaş, OMU R&D  Coordinator Assoc. Prof. Mevlüt Gürbüz, Representative of OMU Public-University-Industry Cooperation Assoc. Prof. Kemal Yıldızlı and Ekrem Altan from OMU Project Development Unit.

During the meeting, Rector Prof. Dr. Yavuz Ünal said that they would regularly organize these meetings twice a year in October and March in order to strengthen the university-industry cooperation.

“Our Strategic Goal is to Produce Information”

Sharing their plans and goals, Rector Ünal said that they would like to enrich the region’s value with the studies at OMU and they have set a strategic goal on knowledge production. Rector Ünal underlined the importance of integration of education and research and said undergraduate students would benefit from the R&D projects soon with the research budget to be provided by the university.

Worthy Ideas were presented at the Consultation Meeting

During the meeting, participants put forward many ideas regarding the development of university-industry collaboration. The participants agreed on increasing the qualified workforce with academic contribution and suggested that the prominent sectors in Samsun should be addressed in terms of cooperation.

Another issue that was emphasized at the meeting was the importance of practical training for students. All the participants agreed that the students should be on the field for a much longer time to apply their theoretical knowledge in practice, thus what should be done in this regard was discussed. In addition, R&D studies and identifying products with high added value were discussed in detail.

The meeting ended after an overall evaluation of the agenda items.
