Research Policy

Ondokuz Mayıs University aims to conduct basic and applied research that turns into social benefit as a fundamental element of the understanding of “Educating competitive individuals who are researching, questioning, analytical, enterprising, who value ethical values and who are socially responsible; conducting transparent, qualified, innovative and sustainable scientific research and increasing social welfare by providing qualified services to stakeholders”. In this context, it adopts an approach that prioritizes the goal of becoming a Research University by considering universal values, ethical principles, freedom of thought, global competition and local, regional, national and universal needs.

Research Ethics

OMU observes ethical principles in the conduct of all research activities and the publication of research findings. It takes into account national and international ethical principles in the protection of research ethics. OMU researchers respect human rights and freedoms, observe animal rights, and protect nature. In complaints regarding the misuse of research, it acts in accordance with the relevant legislation.

Priority Areas

OMU determines priority areas by taking into account scientific and technological developments, country policies, regional needs, and researcher and infrastructure potential, and updates these areas when necessary.

Visibility of Research

In order to ensure that the research conducted is transformed into social benefit and to increase the potential for cooperation in research, OMÜ provides access to all scientific studies produced within its organization by observing the legislation on copyright and the principle of confidentiality in bilateral cooperation. It measures and monitors the effects of research by sharing it with relevant public/private sector representatives and professional chambers. In order to increase the impact and international recognition of OMÜ-based research and to ensure visibility in this way, it encourages participation in research conducted by national and international organizations. It regularly organizes meetings to promote research and its achievements. It encourages the publication of research results in international journals.

Commitment and Conflict of Interest

OMU is against any action that negatively affects the impartial and objective conduct and publication of research, and against employees providing illegal benefits to themselves or to persons or organizations with whom they are affiliated. OMU secures the autonomy of researchers against any pressure on academic activities carried out within legal boundaries. However, employees are personally responsible in the event of a conflict of interest or breach of commitment.

Freedom of Research

OMU fosters a research culture in which the academic freedom of all researchers is respected as long as it complies with legislation and research ethics. It supports researchers in conducting scientific research and in seeking funding for this research.

University Support for Research

OMU provides consultancy and support services to researchers in project/scientific article writing and language control, fund search, patent and commercialization. It allocates the portion of its budget determined by legislation for conducting research activities, establishing/improving the necessary infrastructure and increasing the quality of scientists. In the allocation of research funds, it takes concrete commitments regarding the scope of the research and research output as a basis. Priority areas and interdisciplinary and/or industry-oriented research are considered as reasons for preference. It effectively announces national and international project calls within the institution and encourages researchers to benefit from external funds, meets the written or electronic resource needs of researchers.

University Incentives for Research Results

It aims to increase the impact and international recognition of research conducted within OMU. In this context, it rewards researchers whose research is published, who carry out projects by benefiting from external funds, whose publications are cited a certain number of times and who receive patents.

Researcher Competence

In order to guarantee the achievement of research goals, OMU prioritizes the researcher qualifications of the candidate in the allocation of cadres. When necessary, the institution employs foreign scientists who have the potential to strengthen its research and education-training capacity. It encourages the participation of researchers in domestic/international activities in order to develop basic research skills. It creates career development opportunities for researchers. It provides the necessary facilities to guest researchers. It encourages international researcher mobility.

Interagency Research

OMU conducts joint research with the private/public sectors at national and international levels. To this end, it creates strategic research partnerships and collaboration networks. It signs collaboration protocols to enable and facilitate inter-institutional research.

Interaction of Research and Education Activities

OMU ensures the integration of research activities with education and training. In order to provide a dynamic and effective research environment, it employs postgraduate students who meet the necessary conditions as research assistants during their education. It supports scientific activities organized by student societies in order to gain new researchers and encourage young researchers.

Evaluation of Research Performance

OMU evaluates its research performance every year through the Institutional Internal Evaluation Report, Administrative Activity Report, Innovative and Entrepreneurial University Index Ranking, Academic Incentive Point Ranking, University Ranking by Academic Performance, Times Higher Education World University Rankings and Web of Science statistics. In the light of these evaluations, it makes the necessary institutional arrangements/improvements to reach national and international standards.

Copyrights

OMU supports researchers through PMO and TTO to support and facilitate the transfer of technologies produced within its organization to the private sector. It protects intellectual property rights with the strategies it implements in intellectual property and commercialization initiatives.
