OMU students welcome spring with colorful Hıdırellez festivities
The “Hıdırellez Festivities” organized by the Turkish Teaching Application and Research Center at Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMU) featured colorful scenes. At the event, where traditional games were played and keşkek was served, students celebrated the arrival of spring to the fullest.
Hıdırellez, regarded as a herald of spring, was celebrated with a traditional festival at the Life Center with the participation of students and academics. During the events, ancient traditions of Turkish culture were kept alive, while students boosted their morale before exam stress.
Traditional games attracted interest
Traditional competitions organized as part of the celebrations witnessed fierce contests and entertaining moments. Students enjoyed games such as egg tapping, tug-of-war, rope jumping, sack racing, and carrying eggs with spoons.
Rector Aydın: “May it bring health and peace to our world”
OMU Rector Prof. Dr. Fatma Aydın, who attended the event and delivered a speech, said, “We are celebrating Hıdırellez with our students and academics. We are performing folk dances and keeping this beautiful tradition alive by eating keşkek. I hope that spring and Hıdırellez bring peace and happiness to all of us, and health and peace to our world. With the arrival of spring, may it be the beginning of better days for everyone.”
Prof. Dr. Serkan Şen: “We served keşkek and flour halva”
Director of OMU Turkish Teaching Application and Research Center Prof. Dr. Serkan Şen drew attention to the fact that the event built a cultural bridge, saying, “As the OMU family, we are celebrating this meaningful day together with our students through various activities. Within the scope of the events, we are serving our students keşkek, a local delicacy of Samsun, and flour halva. I hope that Hıdırellez, which brings our university together with our youth, brings beauty to our country and the world.”
