Innovations by OMU Researchers Receive Two New National Patents

Two inventions developed by researchers at Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMU) have been granted national patents by the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office, further strengthening the University’s performance in research, innovation, and intellectual property.

Innovative Washing Machine for Bakery Trays

The first patent was awarded for an invention developed by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Cengiz Görkem Dengiz of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at OMU’s Faculty of Engineering.

Titled “Machine for Washing the Outer Surfaces of Bakery Trays While Food Remains Inside,” the invention enables the exterior surfaces of trays to be cleaned without damaging or contaminating the food they contain.

By offering advantages in terms of hygiene and production time, the machine provides an innovative solution for industrial kitchens and the bakery sector. It is also expected to contribute to improved food safety and operational efficiency.

Microprocessor-Based Measurement System for Electrochromic Devices

The second patent was granted for an invention developed by Dr. İbrahim İnanç and Özge Akpınar Saruhan of the Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering at OMU’s Faculty of Engineering.

Titled “Microprocessor-Based Device for Measuring Electrochromic Device Parameters,” the invention uses an open-source microprocessor to automate the control of electrochromic devices and accurately measure key performance parameters.

These include optical modulation, switching times, coloration efficiency, and cycle life. The system has the potential to provide important technological infrastructure for advanced applications such as smart windows and energy-efficient systems.

Contributing to the Research and Innovation Ecosystem

Through these two newly registered patents, the researchers have transformed their technical expertise into practical solutions with potential industrial applications.

The patents also strengthen OMU’s national intellectual property portfolio and demonstrate the contribution of its academics to research, technological development, and university–industry innovation.
