Rector Hüseyin Akan Meets the Press

Rector Prof. Dr. Hüseyin Akan organized a press meeting at the university, and he made a statement about the 8-year period during which he carried out duties as the Rector of the University.

Akan remarked that the innovations he made during his term would continue work even after transferring his duty, and he said: “What is important for me is the University”.

Press has mentioned our favorable actions

Akan stated that he was considerably supported by the press during this 8-year period, and he remarked: “The press has mentioned all of our favorable actions, and I always took the constructive criticisms into consideration. I would like to thank press for its close relationship with our university”.

Akan underlined that the number of students increased from 21 000 to 52 000 during his term, and he evaluated this increase as an additional value in terms of economic, social and cultural aspects. Rector Akan stated: “If you exclude the university from Samsun, the city will lose one of its most important parts”.

At the meeting, Akan explained the works, investments and improvements recorded between 2008 and 2016 by referring to the figures, and he focused on specific issues.

External resources spent for R&D raised from 20 percent to 80 percent

Akan gave information about the faculties, vocational schools and centers which have been recently established, and he mentioned the criteria they set and the efforts they made for the improvement of the educational quality at the university. Akan emphasized the increasing number of postgraduate students and foreign students, and he stated that he put emphasis on the students coming from Africa that he defined as the continent of the future in terms of exportation.

Rector Akan also mentioned the resources spent for R&D and innovation projects, and he underlined that the external resources which were spent in  for the research projects carried out in 2008-2009 was 20% and that has reached 80% in the recent years. Akan also stated that the cooperation between university and industry was a popular topic, and he indicated that 42 companies are working in TEKNOPARK which was established in 2014, and that 46 projects are currently being carried out.

Our academicians now obtain patents

Akan also evaluated the patent issue, and he explained that no application was made for patents at the university in the past, and that 13 patent applications and 4 registered patents of the academicians were recorded at this moment.  Akan stated: “the number of registered patents in Turkey is 30 in total, 4 of which belong to our academicians. Our academicians obtain patents from now on”.

Akan said that he could proudly speak of the Faculty of Aeronautics and Astronautics which was recently founded in Ballıca, and he underlined that numerous universities had tried to found faculties of aeronautics, but that they could not manage to do it. Akan stated: “our Faculty of Aeronautics is about to become a significant center. Currently 64 students are receiving flight training in the faculty, and 4 officers from Turkish National Police Organization also receive education for pilotage.” Akan emphasized that their objective was to train pilots for Turkish Airlines and that they were making interviews for this purpose.

At the meeting during which breakfast was offered to the participants, Rector Akan was accompanied with Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Hasan Gümüş and Deputy Secretary General Serap Sivrioğlu Sezer.
