OMU Faculty of Medicine welcomed 250 new students to the 2026–2027 academic year with a White Coat Ceremony marking the beginning of their medical education.

The Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMU) Faculty of Medicine held its opening ceremony for the 2026–2027 academic year, welcoming 250 new medical students with a traditional White Coat Ceremony.

Speaking at the ceremony, held at the Atatürk Congress and Culture Center, Dean of the OMU Faculty of Medicine Prof. Dr. Murat Danacı addressed the incoming students and reflected on the University’s academic development.

“Ondokuz Mayıs University has become one of the prominent universities in both the Black Sea Region and Türkiye,” Danacı said. “We expect to achieve our goal of becoming a research university in the near future.”

“You are genuinely fortunate. At our University, you will be working with a dedicated group of people who are deeply committed to education and who work with great effort and determination.”

“A New Hospital Building Will Be Constructed Next to the Rectorate”

Danacı also informed students about developments in OMU’s healthcare infrastructure.

“The capabilities of our hospital continue to expand,” he said. “By the time you graduate, we may already have moved into our new hospital.”

He noted that a new hospital building is planned next to the Rectorate and that construction is expected to begin in 2027.

“You have joined a University with significant strengths both in terms of its academic and human resources and its infrastructure,” Danacı said.

“Be Prepared to Step Outside Your Comfort Zone”

Emphasizing the demanding nature of medical education, Danacı wished the students success throughout their six years of study.

“Medical education is genuinely demanding and stressful,” he said. “You will encounter an enormous amount of information, and for a while you may struggle and ask yourselves, ‘Why am I learning this? When will I ever use it?’ There will be pressure and stress, but eventually everything will begin to fall into place.”

Danacı reminded the students that medicine requires commitment, resilience, and personal sacrifice.

“Be prepared to step outside your comfort zone when you come here and continue on this path,” he said. “There will be days when you cannot stop for lunch and days when you remain on your feet for hours.”

“But at the end of the day, knowing that you have touched someone’s life and receiving their thanks will bring you great satisfaction.”

250 Students Receive Their White Coats

Following the speeches, Prof. Dr. Sancar Barış, a faculty member at the OMU Faculty of Medicine, delivered the opening lecture.

Students admitted to the Turkish- and English-medium medical programs with the highest entrance rankings, followed by the other incoming students, were then invited to the stage and presented with their white coats.

The ceremony marked the formal beginning of medical education for 250 new OMU Faculty of Medicine students.
