A World Pi Day event was organized on 14 March by students of the Primary School Mathematics Teaching Program within the Department of Mathematics and Science Education at the Faculty of Education of Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMU).

The event, held in the Faculty of Education Conference Hall, was attended by Faculty of Education Dean Prof. Dr. Hamza Çalışıcı, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Esen Ersoy, academics, and students and teachers from OMU Foundation College, TED College, 19 Mayıs Kösedik Secondary School, 23 Nisan Secondary School, and Adnan Ölmez Secondary School. The event began with a moment of silence and the National Anthem.

The importance of Pi Day emphasized

In his opening speech, Faculty of Education Dean Prof. Dr. Hamza Çalışıcı highlighted the significance of Pi Day and discussed the mathematical properties of the number Pi.

Explaining why Pi Day is celebrated on 14 March, Prof. Dr. Çalışıcı reminded participants that the date (3/14) represents the approximate value of Pi (3.14). He also noted that numbers are classified as rational and irrational, emphasizing that Pi is an irrational number whose decimal expansion continues infinitely and cannot be expressed as a fraction.

Within the scope of the event, student presentations addressed fundamental mathematical concepts such as the definition of Pi, the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter, and the area of a circle. The presentations also included information on how Pi has been calculated by different mathematicians throughout history.

Medals awarded to winning students

As part of the event, a Pi-themed vocabulary game was played, and a competition was held for memorizing the digits of Pi. Medals were awarded to the students who ranked in the competition.

The program concluded with participants visiting activity tables themed around the number Pi.
