OMU celebrates Library Week with “Healing Library” theme

The 62nd Library Week is being celebrated at Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMU) with events organized under the theme “Healing Library.” Within the scope of the week, coordinated by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and held nationwide, various programs will be implemented by the OMU Department of Library and Documentation between 30 March and 3 April.

The event held at the Central Library was attended by Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Ayşe Pınar Sumer, Secretary General Prof. Dr. Erhan Burak Pancar, Rector’s Advisor Prof. Dr. Serkan Şen, Head of the Department of Library and Documentation Uğur Donbay, as well as academics and students.

Speaking at the opening program of the 62nd Library Week, Rector’s Advisor and Director of the Turkish Teaching Center (TÖMER) Prof. Dr. Serkan Şen drew attention to the historical and cultural role of libraries in the transmission of knowledge. Emphasizing that books, as part of the written culture tradition, play a central role in intergenerational transfer, Şen stated that libraries are not only spaces that provide access to information but also multifaceted living environments that contribute to individuals’ intellectual and emotional development. He also noted that libraries continue to serve as guides in accessing accurate information.

Head of the Department of Library and Documentation Uğur Donbay highlighted the importance of Library Week in promoting a culture of access to information. Donbay thanked all stakeholders contributing to the development of libraries, commemorated librarians who have dedicated their efforts to the profession, and expressed his hope that the week would strengthen awareness of access to information.

Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Ayşe Pınar Sumer also emphasized the social, cultural, and academic functions of libraries, stating that the university continues its efforts to ensure fast and effective access to information for academic staff, students, and children.

Within the scope of the events, a musical theatre performance was staged with the contributions of students from the Graduate School Institute’s Department of Fine Arts Education (Music Education Division), students from the Faculty of Education, and the OMU Daycare Center, under the guidance of Dr. Beril Tekeli Yiğit.

Events will continue throughout the week

According to the program schedule, on 31 March 2026, a “KDDB Visual Impairment Unit and Altınokta Association for the Blind Samsun Branch Provincial Cooperation Meeting” will be held at the Central Library, along with a presentation titled “Uses of Generative Artificial Intelligence Tools in Literature Review” guided by Lecturer Dr. Sema Gül.

On 1 April, a full-day user training and orientation program will be organized, while on 2 April, orientation visits from institutions affiliated with the Ministry of National Education will take place. On 3 April, the program will conclude with a session for wishes and suggestions, a national book reading event, and a tree-planting activity.
