Young scientists showcase projects at the TÜBİTAK middle school projects exhibition hosted at OMU
Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMU) hosted the Regional Exhibition of the Middle School Students Research Projects Competition, organized for the 20th time this year by the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Türkiye (TÜBİTAK) Scientist Support Programs Presidency (BİDEB). As in previous years, OMU continues to welcome enterprising students from different provinces.
The regional exhibition, held between 30 March and 1 April at the Prof. Dr. Mehmet Yalçın Taşmektepligil Sports Hall of the OMU Faculty of Sports Sciences, was opened to visitors, with participation from academics, students, and invited guests.
The exhibition was visited by Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Çetin Kurnaz, TÜBİTAK Project Competitions Samsun Regional Coordinator Prof. Dr. Yıldıray Topçu, Deputy Provincial National Education Directors, and District National Education Directors.
Prof. Dr. Çetin Kurnaz: “You will build a stronger Türkiye”
Emphasizing that the experiences gained through the exhibited projects will serve as milestones in students’ future careers, Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Çetin Kurnaz stated:
“I attach great importance to your involvement in these processes at such a young age. I believe that in the coming years, throughout your high school and university years, you will actively participate in projects. The experience you gain here today will be a significant accumulation for your future work. Out of approximately 20,000 applications submitted to events held across 12 different regions, 3,000 came from Samsun. As the Samsun region, we have achieved a meaningful success. We will continue working together to carry this success even further. Our award ceremony will take place on Thursday. The winners here are all of you. This achievement is not only individual but also a valuable contribution to our region, our city, and our country. You will build a stronger Türkiye. It is very important that you submit your project ideas to the TÜBİTAK system and register in May. I especially ask you to follow this process seriously. I would like to thank everyone who contributed, especially our teachers.”
Prof. Dr. Yıldıray Topçu: “The Samsun region ranked first in Türkiye in terms of applications”
In his opening speech, TÜBİTAK Project Competitions Samsun Regional Coordinator Prof. Dr. Yıldıray Topçu stated:
“This competition, which makes significant contributions to bringing our youth together with science, was initially launched by the Ministry of National Education (MoNE) under the name ‘This Is My Work’ and has been organized by TÜBİTAK since the 2016–2017 academic year. This year, the competition is being held simultaneously in 12 regional centers across Türkiye. The Samsun region ranked first in Türkiye in terms of the number of applications, clearly demonstrating the strong interest of our young participants in science.”
Prof. Dr. Yıldıray Topçu: “Today, you are not only participating in a competition but also learning to think, produce, and develop solutions”
Addressing the students, Prof. Dr. Yıldıray Topçu said:
“Science begins with curiosity, develops through research, and reaches success with patience. Today, you are not only participating in a competition but also learning how to think, produce, and develop solutions. Remember, the experiences you gain here are the most valuable rewards you will receive. Being part of this exhibition is already a significant achievement. Reaching the finals is certainly a source of pride, but what truly matters is the effort you have put into this process.”
Within the scope of the exhibition, participants examined the projects prepared by students and visited the stands to receive detailed information. The event, which encourages students’ active participation in scientific production processes, featured evaluations conducted by expert academics in their respective fields.
The Middle School Students Research Projects Competition Regional Exhibition was held simultaneously in 12 regional centers across Türkiye in 10 different fields: biology, geography, values education, physics, chemistry, mathematics, history, technological design, Turkish, and software. The Samsun Region consisted of Amasya, Çorum, Giresun, Kastamonu, Ordu, Sinop, Tokat, and the regional center Samsun.
This year, a total of 19,436 applications were submitted to the competition, of which 3,280 came from the Samsun Region. Following a preliminary evaluation conducted by expert academics, a total of 100 projects from 10 different fields qualified to participate in the Regional Finals.
Over the course of three days, students had the opportunity to present their projects to academics from various universities. As a result of the evaluations, the top-ranking projects will be determined. Projects that rank first in each field will earn the right to participate in the Türkiye Final, which will be held in Ankara in May 2026.
