Prof. Dr. Mustafa Aktaş Leads TÜBİTAK-Funded Project to Develop Domestic Motor Drives for Electric Vehicles
A project led by Prof. Dr. Mustafa Aktaş of the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering at Ondokuz Mayıs University’s (OMU) Faculty of Engineering has been selected for funding under the TÜBİTAK 1505 University–Industry Cooperation Support Programme.
Conducted in collaboration with REEDER Technology Industry and Trade Inc., the project is titled “Design and Implementation of a Motor Drive for L6- and L7-Class Vehicles.”
The project aims to develop a domestic and original powertrain system for electric vehicles as an alternative to currently imported motor and motor-drive systems. It will involve the design, prototype production, and performance validation of a 6-kW IE4 high-efficiency induction motor and an integrated motor drive featuring MOSFET-based power electronics.
The researchers aim to make the motor and motor-drive system fully customisable at both the hardware and software levels. Advanced control algorithms will be used to improve energy efficiency and performance, while domestic production is expected to reduce manufacturing costs and dependence on imported technologies.
The research team includes Dr. Barış Çavuş of OMU’s Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Dr. Yusuf Avşar of Samsun University, and Dr. Arda Kılıç and Dr. Hande Nevin Kılıç of OSTİM Technical University.
One doctoral and three master’s scholarship students will also participate in the project, gaining research experience in electric motors, power electronics, and advanced control systems.
By combining academic expertise with industrial production capacity, the project is expected to contribute to the development of domestically produced technologies for light electric vehicles and strengthen university–industry cooperation in electric mobility.
