Dean of Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMU) Faculty of Architecture Prof. Dr. Derya Oktay’s study on “A Critical Approach to Sustainable Urbanism: Lessons from Traditional and Contemporary Paradigms” has been used in The European Academy of Land Use and Development’s (EALD) source book named “Land Ownership and Land Use Development: The Integration of Past, Present, and Future in Spatial Planning and Land Management Policies”.

Emphasizing the mistake in the exact implementation of city planning and design methods produced in the western world without taking all the values and properties of the space into account, Dr. Oktay also suggests a new and holistic frame which combines the new planning methods with the lessons learned from the traditional Turkish (Ottoman) city which is presented by Dr. Oktay as the perfect example for sustainable urbanization.

The book, consisting of chapters written by invited academicians and published by one the most prestigious scientific publishers in Europe "vdf Hochschulverlag AG an der ETH, Zürich", sheds light on the development of cities in the European countries.
