Celebration of Turkmenistan’s 30th Anniversary of Independence at OMU

Due to the 30th anniversary of Turkmenistan's independence, Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMU) International Relations Unit organized a celebration event with Turkmenistan students studying at OMU in compliance with the pandemic restrictions and measures.

The event held in cooperation with the Turkmenistan Embassy in Blue Hall at the Atatürk Congress and Culture Center was attended by Samsun Member of Parliament Bedri Yaşar, Rector Prof. Dr. Yavuz Ünal, Turkmenistan Ambassador to Turkey İşankuli Amanlıyev, Mayor of İlkadım Necattin Demirtaş, Vice Rectors Prof. Dr. Cengiz Batuk and Prof. Dr. Fehmi Yazıcı, Secretary General Prof. Dr. Hüseyin Gençcelep, Head of OMU International Relations Unit Assoc. Prof. Mustafa Said Kurşunoğlu,  academicians and students.

The event, which started with the opening of an exhibition featuring photographs reflecting the nature, culture and history of Turkmenistan and items specific to Turkmenistan, continued with the opening speeches after the national anthems of the two states were played.

“Turkmenistan will maintain its independence as long as the world exists”

Expressing his pleasure to come together on such a meaningful day, Rector Prof. Dr. Yavuz Ünal said: “We are extremely happy and gratified to be on the threshold of a world in which deep-rooted relationship that will be established in the future with our sister country Turkmenistan, through our Turkmen brothers and sisters studying at our university. We hope that Turkmenistan, celebrating the 30th anniversary of its independence will continue to exist as an independent, self-confident state that adds value to the world, as long as the world exists. At this point, our only hope is you as you will build the future and your success will be our guarantee.

“Full Independence is Possible through Cultural Independence”

Pointing out that the cultural independence is also necessary for full independence as well as the military independence, Rector Ünal said, “Full independence is not possible without cultural independence. Therefore, what we expect from you is to protect your cultural freedom and authenticity concerning the  full independence of our nation."

“Make the Most of Technological Opportunities to Produce”

Pointing out that we need to use technique and technology to produce and make life easier in order to be distinguished from other nations, Rector Prof. Dr. Yavuz Ünal continued: “Therefore, you have to get a different perspective for your education life. The steps you take today and the real dreams you make will enable you to be the actors that shape the world of tomorrow. “

Addressing the Turkmenistanian students studying at OMU, Rector Unal said, “It is very important that you return to your country by creating the infrastructure that will meet the needs of your country and build your country. Being a strong state depends on the investment you make in yourself today. Therefore, our desire is for you to keep the values in your country alive with the qualified education you receive from OMU. For this reason, we are ready to give you all kinds of support and meet all your demands.”

Rector Prof. Dr. Yavuz Ünal also stated that TEKNOFEST 2022 will be held in Samsun and he underlined the outstanding success of OMU at TEKNOFEST 2021 and he asked Turkmenistanian students to be involved in this process, too.

“The first country to accept the independence of Turkmenistan is the Republic of Turkey”

Referring to the strong relationship between Turkey and Turkmenistan, Ambassador İşankuli Amanlıyev said, “The Republic of Turkey is the first country to accept the independence of Turkmenistan and to establish an embassy in Ashgabat. Our common historical and cultural values, whose roots go back to the depths of centuries, appear as important conditions for the development of relations between the two countries. Today, with the leadership of the national leaders of the two countries, efforts are made to increase the friendly conversations to a higher level.”

“Our Citizens Studying in Turkey Contribute to the Development of Our Country A Lot”

Ambassador İşankuli Amanlıyev advised the Turkmenian students to make the best use of the education they received from OMU, and  said, “We are striving for them to return to our country as qualified staff  and to become useful people in our country in the future. It is possible to say that successful results have been achieved in this regard. Our citizens studying in Turkey contribute to the development of our country. On behalf of the Turkmenistan Embassy, I would like to thank OMU and our Rector for the support provided to Turkmenistan students.”

Mayor of İlkadım Necattin Demirtaş stated they are honored that the students living in the Turkey  contribute to their country a lot by gaining knowledge and equipment in Turkey, and said; “ The goal is to live in a more prosperous country. For this reason, you need to work hard and not give up. I believe that our students here will make the best use of the opportunities provided by the state and their families. I wish you all success and congratulate the 30th anniversary of Turkmenistan's independence.”

“One Nation, Two States”

Samsun Member of Parliamanet and Member of the Turkmenistan-Turkey Inter-Parliamentary Friendship Group of the Turkish Grand National Assembly, Bedri Yaşar said, “We sincerely wish Turkmenistan to live forever. Although we are two states, we are one nation. In particular, our President and the President of Turkmenistan have made very serious efforts to improve the relationship between the two countries.”

Bedri Yaşar also said, “In Turkmenistan, we have reached a commercial volume of approximately 50 billion dollars. Even during the pandemic period, this volume increased by around 15 percent. The trade union we established with Turkmenistan further enlarges the sphere of influence of the relationship between the two countries. Those who build the main bridge between the two countries are the students studying in Turkey.”

Students from Turkmenistan performed their country's poems, songs and dances at the event, which continued with a video presentation introducing Turkmenistan.

At the end of the event held at OMU Life Center, the members of the protocol presented a certificate of appreciation to Turkmenistanian students.
