OMU students honored in “Silent Discrimination” reels competition

Awards were presented to Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMU) students who ranked in the “Silent Discrimination Reels Competition,” which aims to raise awareness about unintentional bullying toward individuals with hearing impairments.

In the competition, the first prize was awarded to Rabia Baylar, a student in the Radio, Television and Cinema (RTC) Department of the OMU Faculty of Communication. The second prize was won by Cansu Çelik, also an RTC student, while the third prize went to Oğuzhan Turgut, another RTC student. The award-winning students were congratulated for their achievements.

At the award ceremony, organized in cooperation with the Ondokuz Mayıs University Social Contribution Coordination Office and the Disability Services Unit of the Samsun Metropolitan Municipality Department of Health and Social Services, the reels videos prepared by the students were used as a tool to raise public awareness about unintentional bullying and silent discrimination.

The program, held within the scope of the Hearing-Impaired Coordination Center established by the Samsun Metropolitan Municipality, took place at the Mavi Işıklar Facilities. The event was attended by 30 individuals with hearing impairments from 25 districts of Samsun, along with 15 sign language interpreters.

The event was attended by Rector’s Advisor Prof. Dr. Serkan Şen, Dean of the Faculty of Communication Prof. Dr. Onur Bekiroğlu, Samsun Metropolitan Municipality Secretary General Necmi Çamaş, Head of the Department of Social Services Eyüp Çakır, OMU Social Contribution Coordinator Assoc. Prof. Dr. Safa Çelebi, and President of the Sign Language Interpreters Association Banu Türkuğur Şahin, as well as many other invited guests.

The event concluded with the screening of the award-winning students’ videos and a group photo session.
