As part of World Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) Awareness Day, players from Samsunspor—a top-tier Turkish football club set to represent Türkiye in the European Confederation Cup this year—came together with children affected by DMD. The event was organized in collaboration with the Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMU) Faculty of Medicine, the DMD Families Association, and Samsunspor Club, and took place in the OMU Faculty of Medicine’s foyer area.
The event welcomed Samsunspor Vice President Veysel Bilen, team captain Zeki Yavru, and players Soner Aydoğdu, Yunus Emre Çift, and Rick van Drongelen. The players spent time chatting with the children and offered them emotional support and encouragement.
As part of the event, a special exhibition showcased drawings made by children living with DMD. The display received significant attention and was warmly appreciated by visitors.
The event was hosted by OMU Faculty of Medicine Dean Prof. Dr. Murat Danacı, Chief Physician Prof. Dr. Ünsal Özgen, Deputy Chief Physician Prof. Dr. Hızır Ufuk Akdemir, Head of the Pediatric Neurology Department Prof. Dr. Ayşe Aksoy, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Gökçen Öz Tunçer.
In a heartfelt speech, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Gökçen Öz Tunçer emphasized the importance of community awareness, saying,
“Our children with DMD need everyone’s support to become independent individuals and participate fully in society. This starts with being aware of the condition.”
At the end of the program, a surprise birthday cake was presented to team captain Zeki Yavru. Organized by the children, the birthday celebration added joy and excitement to the day.
World Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) Awareness Day is observed annually on September 7 around the globe. DMD is a genetic muscle disorder that begins in childhood and gradually leads to muscle weakening. It is more commonly seen in boys.
With early diagnosis, regular follow-ups, and supportive therapies, quality of life can be significantly improved for individuals living with DMD.
This special day aims to raise awareness about DMD, highlight the importance of early detection, and support children and families affected by the condition. In many countries, walks, art exhibits, sports events, social media campaigns, and solidarity activities are held to increase public and policymaker awareness of DMD.
