OMU joins Republic Day celebrations across Samsun

Republic Day events across Samsun included a wreath-laying ceremony, official celebrations, performances, and a reception, with OMU represented by Vice-Rector Prof. Dr. Alper Kesten.

The 103rd anniversary of the Republic of Türkiye was celebrated with pride and enthusiasm in Samsun, the city where the first step of the Turkish National Struggle was taken.

October 29 Republic Day celebrations in Samsun included a wreath-laying ceremony, official celebrations, a Republic Day march, and a reception.

Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMU) was represented at the ceremonies by Vice-Rector Prof. Dr. Alper Kesten.

Republic Day celebrations begin with wreath-laying ceremony

The celebrations began with a wreath-laying ceremony at the Onur Anıtı (Monument of Honor).

The ceremony was attended by Samsun Governor Orhan Tavlı, Garrison Commander Major General Fethi Oltulu, Samsun Metropolitan Mayor Halit Doğan, OMU Vice-Rector Prof. Dr. Alper Kesten, district mayors, representatives of local institutions, and members of the public.

Following the wreath-laying ceremony, Governor Tavlı signed the Book of Honor.

Official Republic Day ceremony

The October 29 Republic Day program continued with an official reception ceremony at the Samsun Governor’s Office.

Celebrations then moved to İstiklal Square, where participants observed a moment of silence and sang the Turkish National Anthem.

The program featured poetry recitals, concerts, folk dance performances, and various other activities.

OMU Vice-Rector Prof. Dr. Alper Kesten attended the celebrations on behalf of the University.

Republic Day message from Rector Aydın

OMU Rector Prof. Dr. Fatma Aydın also issued a message marking the 103rd anniversary of the Republic:

“We celebrate the 103rd anniversary of the proclamation of our Republic with great pride and enthusiasm.

Founded under the leadership of Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, our Republic stands as one of the greatest achievements of our independence and our aspiration for modernization.

As Ondokuz Mayıs University, we will continue to work for the bright future of our country, guided by science, reason, and education and committed to the fundamental values of our Republic.

On this meaningful occasion, I commemorate with respect, gratitude, and remembrance Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of our Republic, and all our national heroes, and I sincerely wish our nation a happy October 29 Republic Day.”

OMU administrators also attended the Republic Day reception held at the Şehit Ömer Halisdemir Hall of the Samsun Metropolitan Municipality Multi-Purpose Hall.

The University was represented at the reception by Vice-Rectors Prof. Dr. Alper Kesten, Prof. Dr. Çetin Kurnaz, and Prof. Dr. Ayşe Pınar Sumer, together with Secretary General Prof. Dr. Erhan Burak Pancar.

The reception included activities highlighting the meaning and significance of Republic Day.
