The completed application forms part of OMU’s sustainable campus strategy, integrating water conservation with its work on zero waste, circular economy, resource efficiency, energy efficiency, and climate resilience.

Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMU) has taken another important step toward building a more sustainable campus in response to the growing pressure of climate change on water resources. The University has completed the preparation and application process for the Blue Water Efficiency Certificate.

The initiative is being pursued within the framework of the Water Efficiency Initiative and the Water Efficiency Regulation administered by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, with the aim of strengthening OMU’s institutional capacity for the efficient, responsible, and sustainable use of water.

The Blue Water Efficiency certification process places particular emphasis on assessing current water use, monitoring consumption, setting water-efficiency targets, conducting awareness activities, and developing practices that encourage water conservation.

Water Security Becomes an Increasingly Important Global Priority

The effects of climate change, changing precipitation patterns, increasingly frequent droughts, and growing pressure on water resources have made water security a major global priority.

Türkiye is also strengthening national policies aimed at protecting water resources and improving water-use efficiency in response to climate-related risks.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry has highlighted Türkiye’s location in a region where the impacts of climate change are expected to be felt strongly and where water resources may face increasing pressure in the future.

Promoting a Culture of Water Efficiency

Within this context, universities have an important role not only as institutions of education and research but also as environments where sustainable models of living can be developed, tested, and put into practice.

OMU’s application for the Blue Water Efficiency Certificate represents a concrete step in strengthening its institutional approach to protecting water resources at the campus level.

Through this process, the University aims not only to manage water consumption more effectively across its campuses but also to help promote a broader culture of water efficiency among students, academic staff, and administrative personnel.

Toward a Climate-Friendly and Water-Sensitive Campus

Completion of the Blue Water Efficiency Certificate application represents an important stage in OMU’s efforts to develop a sustainable campus.

The University aims to integrate its water-efficiency approach with ongoing work in zero waste, circular economy, resource efficiency, energy efficiency, and climate action, contributing to a campus model that is climate-friendly, resource-efficient, water-sensitive, and resilient to the impacts of climate change.

Through its Blue Water Efficiency Certificate application, OMU seeks to embed the understanding that water is not simply a resource to be consumed, but a shared resource that must be protected.

The University will continue its efforts to extend this awareness throughout campus life while strengthening its goal of leaving a more sustainable environment for future generations.
