From rugby to e-sports: OMU athletes shine on the national stage

Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMU) Rector Prof. Dr. Fatma Aydın welcomed student-athletes who achieved outstanding results in various championships organized by the Turkish University Sports Federation (TUSF) during a reception held in the Senate Hall.

The athletes were accompanied by Head of the Health, Culture and Sports Department Selman Aslan and Branch Manager İhsan Güler.

OMU athletes and teams recognized for national success

During the reception, individual athletes and teams who successfully represented OMU in different sports disciplines and achieved national rankings were congratulated for their accomplishments.

At the Turkish Inter-University Wrestling Championship, Büşra Koç won the silver medal and became Türkiye runner-up in the Women's 50 kg Freestyle category.

At the Turkish Inter-University Arm Wrestling Championship, Özlem Akbulut placed second in the women's 80 kg left-arm category and third in the right-arm category. Emine Hatun Cebeci finished second in the women's 60 kg right-arm category, while Makbule Orhan secured fourth place in the women's 65 kg right-arm category. The OMU Women's Arm Wrestling Team also claimed third place in the overall team standings.

The OMU E-Sports Team achieved a major success by winning the Valorant title at the UNILIG E-Sports Türkiye Championship Finals. The team drew attention with its strong performance throughout the competition held in Gaziantep and brought a national championship to the university.

OMU's Men's Rugby Team was crowned Turkish champion at the UNILIG Rugby Sevens Championship in Istanbul after outperforming its rivals throughout the tournament.

OMU athletes also excelled in Traditional Archery, winning the team championship at the UNILIG Traditional Archery Türkiye Championship held in Istanbul. In addition, Fahrettin Yöndemir earned a silver medal by finishing second in the individual category.

Competing at the Fencing Championship organized within the framework of UNILIG Gazi FEST in Ankara, the OMU Fencing Team secured third place in the team standings.

Rector Prof. Dr. Fatma Aydın stated that the athletes’ accomplishments were a great source of pride for the university and congratulated both the students and their coaches.

She emphasized that OMU would continue to expand its support for sports and student-athletes, noting that achieving excellence both academically and athletically reflects the university’s commitment to a well-rounded educational experience.
