Unseen heroes of healthcare: OMU sterilization unit opens its doors on World Sterilization Sciences Day
As part of World Sterilization Sciences Day, the Central Sterilization Unit (CSU), one of the most critical departments of the Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMU) Faculty of Medicine Hospital, hosted a meaningful event by opening its doors to all hospital staff.
In the first half of the day, the event, organized in coordination with Nursing Services, welcomed hospital personnel to the unit in groups. Visitors were provided with detailed information on the functioning of the unit, which forms the cornerstone of surgical safety, as well as the modern technologies used and the sensitive stages of sterilization processes. Following the field tour, participants moved to the training hall, where they watched a short film explaining the processes in detail. The visual presentation, reinforced by simultaneous technical explanations, once again highlighted the importance of sterilization.
In the afternoon session, the unit was visited by Chief Physician Prof. Dr. Ünsal Özgen, Sterilization Unit Responsible Physician Prof. Dr. Fatih Temuçin, Deputy Chief Physician Dr. Mehmet Çelebi, hospital administrators, and operating room staff.
“We are proud to celebrate this meaningful day in our new unit”
Prof. Dr. Fatih Temuçin, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Responsible Physician of the Sterilization Unit, emphasized in his speech the key role of the sterilization team in hospital operations and the dedicated efforts they carry out behind the scenes. He expressed their pride in celebrating this special day in a new sterilization unit equipped with the latest standards and extended his gratitude to Chief Physician Prof. Dr. Ünsal Özgen for his trust, determination, and support from the very beginning of the process.
“The operating room and sterilization are like an intersection that must never stop”
Chief Physician Prof. Dr. Ünsal Özgen highlighted the vital importance of sterilization processes within hospital dynamics through a metaphor. Comparing the integrated functioning of the sterilization unit and operating rooms to a constantly flowing intersection that must never stop, Prof. Dr. Özgen thanked all sterilization staff for their intensive efforts in maintaining uninterrupted and flawless service.
The event, held in a warm and sincere atmosphere, concluded with commemorative photographs and refreshments.
