The results of the 2025 UI GreenMetric World University Rankings have been announced. The ranking evaluates universities worldwide based on criteria such as environmental sensitivity, energy and climate change, waste management, transportation, and sustainability.
This year, Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMU) rose 57 places to become the 224th most sustainable campus in the world. Hosting a campus life in harmony with nature and characterized by ecological sensitivity, OMU ranked 27th among universities in Türkiye.
OMU’s achievement stands out in the 2025 ranking, in which 1,745 universities from 105 countries were evaluated. By steadily increasing its efforts in the field of sustainability each year, OMU continues to take important steps toward becoming a green and environmentally friendly campus.
While OMU ranked 519th in 2021, it rose to 469th in 2022, 364th in 2023, and 28th in 2024. In 2025, the university climbed 57 places at once to reach 224th place.
In the 2025 UI GreenMetric World University Rankings, the top three universities worldwide were as follows: Wageningen University of the Netherlands ranked first, University College Cork of Ireland ranked second, and Nottingham Trent University of the United Kingdom ranked third.
Among universities in Türkiye, Istanbul Technical University ranked 25th globally, placing first in Türkiye. Yıldız Technical University ranked 48th globally and second in Türkiye, while Cyprus International University ranked 55th globally, placing third in Türkiye.
Evaluating OMU’s rise in the 2025 GreenMetric results, Rector Prof. Dr. Fatma Aydın made the following remarks:
“This significant achievement of our university in the field of sustainability is the result of our determined efforts to establish an environmentally conscious campus culture. The projects we carry out across a wide range—from green area management to energy efficiency, from waste reduction to transportation policies—have contributed to OMU’s rise to a more visible and stronger position among world universities. This progress demonstrates how firmly we have embraced our vision of being an environmentally friendly university.”
Emphasizing that sustainability efforts will continue without slowing down, Aydın added:
“OMU’s rise of 57 places at once to reach 224th position is the clearest indicator of our institutional commitment in this field. All units of our university are working together to create a more livable, greener, and more environmentally friendly campus. In the coming period, we aim to strengthen our environmental policies in line with national and international standards and to make OMU one of the universities that set an example in the field of sustainability.”
