Samsun’s iconic public spaces were reinterpreted through the “Creative Workshop: Places and Experiences,” an event organized with a focus on urban memory and user experience.

The workshop was carried out under the coordination of the Samsun Urban Studies and Conservation Research Group (SAMKENTKORUMA), which operates within the R&D Coordination Office of Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMU), with the support of the OMU Faculty of Architecture, the Chamber of Architects Samsun Branch affiliated with TMMOB, and Samsun Metropolitan Municipality. Established to conduct interdisciplinary research, SAMKENTKORUMA also realized its first research activity through this workshop.

The two-day program was coordinated by Dr. Damla Karagöz, Research Assistant from the Department of City and Regional Planning at the OMU Faculty of Architecture, and Research Assistant Nilay Nida Can from the Department of Architecture at the same faculty. A total of 16 participants took part in the workshop, including Dr. Micheal Deniz Yılmaz, Research Assistant from the OMU Faculty of Architecture and the Department of Archaeology, along with his students, as well as students from the Faculty of Architecture at Samsun University.

During the first day of the workshop, participants conducted field studies in Bankalar Avenue, Cumhuriyet Square, Anakent Square, and Saathane Square, which are among Samsun’s historical and commercial centers. The studies examined public spaces through the lens of user experiences and everyday urban practices.

AI-supported design proposals

On the second day, the activities continued under the hosting of the Chamber of Architects Samsun Branch affiliated with TMMOB. Following participatory spatial analyses, participants developed solution proposals addressing the identified issues. In the final stage of the program, alternative spatial proposals were produced using artificial intelligence-supported design tools.

All analyses and designs produced within the scope of the workshop, which was also visited by Chamber of Architects Samsun Branch President Burak Şener, will be presented to the public through an exhibition to be held at the Chamber of Architects in June.
