OMU introduces an innovative app to reduce food waste and support businesses
Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMU) has introduced a new initiative within its efforts to develop sustainability- and social-benefit-oriented digital solutions, unveiling the “FazlaVar” application to reduce food waste.
The application, developed by the Department of Information Technology, was presented by Rector Prof. Dr. Fatma Aydın during the “Zero Waste Hackathon” organized within the scope of 30 March International Zero Waste Day.
An innovative approach to food waste
Speaking at the launch event, OMU Rector Prof. Dr. Fatma Aydın highlighted that approximately 1.3 billion tons of food are wasted each year globally, while in Türkiye this figure reaches 18–19 million tons. Rector Aydın emphasized that in businesses such as restaurants, cafés, and bakeries, products that are still fresh at the end of the day often have to be discarded, resulting in both economic and environmental losses.
Prof. Dr. Aydın stated that the “FazlaVar” application was developed as a solution to this issue, allowing unsold products at the end of the day to be offered through the app at discounted prices ranging from 50% to 70%. In this way, the aim is both to prevent food waste and to enable users to access food at more affordable prices.
Easy access with the “come-and-collect” system
One of the key features highlighted during the presentation was the location-based “come-and-collect” system. Rector Aydın explained that this system enables users to instantly view available offers from nearby businesses and collect their purchased products within a specified time frame.
Additional benefits for businesses
During the program, Rector Aydın also addressed the advantages the application offers to businesses. She noted that products that would otherwise be discarded are reintegrated into the economy, allowing businesses to generate additional revenue and attract new customers. She also emphasized that businesses can easily create products and campaigns through the system.
With such innovative projects, OMU continues to contribute to environmental sustainability while producing technology-based solutions that generate social benefit.
