Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMU) has achieved a remarkable victory by becoming the European champion in the taekwondo team category at the 2025 European Universities Combat Sports Championship held in Warsaw, Poland.
The event, which began on August 22 at Sluzewiec Hippodrome, featured 1,400 athletes from 385 universities across Europe. OMU was represented by a delegation of seven athletes.
OMU athletes delivered outstanding performances, securing the following medals:
• Tuvanna Nazlı Kesgin – Gold in the 46 kg category
• Senanur Çelik – Gold in the 53 kg category
• Kardelen Demir – Gold in the 73 kg category
• Gökhan Emre Kesgin – Gold in the 68 kg category
• Edanur Çelik – Bronze in the 57 kg category
• Alihan Kuru – Bronze in the 58 kg category
Berk Yumak, competing in the 74 kg category, was eliminated in the quarterfinals.
Thanks to these strong individual results, OMU climbed to the top of the overall team rankings and was crowned European champion in the team classification.
OMU Rector Prof. Dr. Fatma Aydın expressed her pride in the students’ achievements, stating:
“Our athletes have not only impressed with their individual performances but have also demonstrated an exceptional team spirit, placing OMU at the peak of Europe. I congratulate our athletes and their coaches, who have brought honor to both our country and our city of Samsun.”
With this result, OMU has brought the prestigious title of European Champion to both Türkiye and the city of Samsun.
