KİTAM Expands Advanced Analysis Infrastructure with New Instruments and Services
New TGA, FTIR, and SEM systems, together with LC-MS/MS phenolic compound analysis and upcoming EDS elemental analysis, are expanding OMU’s research and R&D capabilities across multiple disciplines.
The Black Sea Advanced Technology Research and Application Center (KİTAM) at Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMU) continues to expand the advanced analytical capabilities it provides for scientific research and R&D.
In 2026, the Center significantly strengthened its infrastructure with the addition of new Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) systems.
KİTAM has also introduced a new phenolic compound analysis service using LC-MS/MS.
With these instruments and expanded analytical services, the Center now offers advanced capabilities across a broad range of research areas, from material characterization and thermal analysis to surface and morphological examination and the identification of phenolic compounds.
New TGA and FTIR Systems Expand Material Characterization Capacity
The newly installed PerkinElmer STA 8000 Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) system enables researchers to examine temperature-dependent changes in material mass, thermal stability, and decomposition behavior.
KİTAM has also added a PerkinElmer Spectrum Two FTIR system, which can be used to investigate the functional groups and chemical structures of different sample types.
Together, the TGA and FTIR systems support characterization studies across numerous fields, including materials science, chemistry, food science, biomaterials, and polymers.
New SEM Strengthens Advanced Imaging Infrastructure
KİTAM has further enhanced its imaging capabilities with a new Hitachi SU3800 Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM).
Capable of operating in both high-vacuum and variable-pressure modes, the instrument offers a wide magnification range for detailed examination of material surfaces and morphological properties at the micro- and nanoscale.
The system provides a powerful characterization platform for research across multiple disciplines.
An Energy-Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (EDS) detector with an active area of 100 mm² is also being integrated into the SEM system. EDS elemental analysis services will begin on September 28, 2026.
With the EDS system, researchers will be able not only to examine surface morphology but also to determine the elemental composition of samples and analyze the distribution of elements within selected regions.
Phenolic Compound Analysis Launched with LC-MS/MS
KİTAM has also begun offering phenolic compound analysis using the Shimadzu LCMS-8040 LC-MS/MS system located in its Chromatography and Mass Spectrometry Unit.
Providing high selectivity and sensitivity, LC-MS/MS enables the analysis of phenolic compounds in food products, plant-based materials, natural products, and related research samples.
The service allows advanced chromatographic analyses required for research into natural products, functional foods, plant extracts, and similar materials to be performed within KİTAM.
Expanded Infrastructure Supports Academia and Industry
Through its new instrument investments and expanded analytical services, KİTAM continues to strengthen OMU’s scientific research and R&D capacity.
The Center’s facilities are available not only to OMU researchers but also to other higher education institutions, public organizations, and the private sector.
