1,000 migratory birds tracked in Samsun’s Kızılırmak Delta during spring migration
At the Kızılırmak Delta Bird Sanctuary in Samsun, which is included in the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List, approximately 1,000 birds were ringed during the 2026 spring migration, and their age, sex, and migration conditions were recorded.
Deniz Oğuz, a licensed expert bird ringer working at the Cernek Research Station of the Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMU) Ornithology Research Center, provided information to the Anadolu Agency (AA) about the activities carried out at the station.
Stating that the work at the station continues without interruption, Oğuz said, “We carry out bird ringing studies in spring and autumn, that is, during the periods when bird migration is most intense. During the 2026 Spring Period, we ringed approximately 1,000 birds.”
“Kızılırmak Delta Bird Sanctuary is one of the most important stopover points during northward migration”
Expressing that birds migrate from south to north, Oğuz said, “During the northward migration, one of the most important stopover points is the Kızılırmak Delta Bird Sanctuary in Samsun. We capture the birds using stationary nets in the field, check them every hour, and bring them to the station. There are rings of different sizes for each species, and these rings include information about the country where the bird was ringed. Therefore, each bird has a unique ring and a unique number. After determining age and sex, and taking measurements such as fat reserves, muscle condition, and various morphometric parameters, we release the birds again.”
“Kızılırmak Delta Bird Sanctuary is a highly significant area for bird migration”
Emphasizing the importance of the Samsun Kızılırmak Delta on migration routes, Oğuz stated, “The species we have ringed most frequently during this period at the Kızılırmak Delta Bird Sanctuary include species such as the willow warbler, the blackcap, and nightingales. Just now, we ringed three species: the thrush nightingale, the willow warbler, and the blackcap. In spring, there is a migration from south to north. That is, there is a migration from Europe or from regions such as India and Asia toward Europe, Siberia, and the north of Asia and Europe. The Kızılırmak Delta Bird Sanctuary is a highly important area for both southward and northward bird migrations.”
