The British university ranking company Times Higher Education (THE) has announced its World University Rankings during the World Academic Summit organized at the King’s College in London on 3-5 September 2017. Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMU) has ranked among the top 1000 universities in the World University Rankings 2018.

THE uses various criteria such as number of students, number of international students, female to male ratio, research scores, educational scores, citations, industrial income, international outlook, etc. in order to evaluate the participating universities across the globe. This year, University of Oxford was ranked at the top, University of Cambridge placed second, and California Institute of Technology came third. Four Turkish universities ranked among top 500, and a total of 22 Turkish universities have ranked among top 1000.

OMU is ranked 17th among the Turkish universities and it was the first time that OMU found itself in the list of top 1000 universities. In a world where there are approximately 20 thousand universities, it is regarded as an important accomplishment to be among the first 5%.

OMU’s achievement was a welcome change in a year where the overall placings of the Turkish universities have decreased.
