“16th Traditional Spring Cup 19 Mayıs Chess Tournament” organized by Chess Club of Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMU) and performed with the contribution of the Department of Health, Culture and Sports and OMU Foundation was started.
The competition starting with Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Sevilhan Mennan’s first move in OMU Students’ Center will be held in three categories for general group, 7-10-age group, and 11-14-age group, and it will last for three days. Güngör Kural, Head of the Department of Health, Culture and Sports and the Directors of other departments were also present in the opening ceremony.
Vice Rector Sevilhan Mennan wished luck to the competitors in her speech before her first move, and she stated: “Last year, I was the one making the first move, as well. I wish you good luck”. Vice Rector Mennan talked to the competitors on the tables.
Asst. Prof. İrfan Şaka, Academic Supervisor of OMU Chess Club, expressed: “450 competitors at different ages from 30 different cities were preregistered in the competition and the registrations were completed weeks ago. Just like every year, we will give numerous awards such as cash money, golds, cups, medals, chess sets and chess books to 39 competitors ranking among top players at the end of the competition expected to witness great challenges”.
