Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMU) Faculty of Architecture Dean Prof. Derya Oktay participated in the EAAE (European Association for Architectural Education) Conference and General Assembly held between August 30 and September 2 in Bordeaux, France.
Joint education and research activities conducted with the cooperation of European architecture schools and partners from outside of the continent were shared and discussed during the 40th of the conference held this year with the theme “Learning with the World”. This joint works addressed the importance to show respect and sensibility to the environmental and social context of the place when conducting design works in a different land than one’s own. During the conference, it was also stressed that both students and academic staff should take more responsibility in relation to works supporting the spirit of the place.
Prof. Oktay stated her satisfaction due to the correspondence of the vision of OMU Faculty of Architecture, which gives importance to sustainable architecture and the emphasis in the EAAE Conference, and said that the OMU Faculty of Architecture would become part of the EAAE Defence Network established after the meeting at Bordeaux, which will give weight to design and research studies in historic
In addition to the conference supported by presentations of speakers from Europe, the USA and Japan, a technical visit was organized for the attendees. Faculty of Architecture managers from various European countries took part in the visit including the presentation and review of Bordeaux’s historical and traditional architecture legacy and contemporary applications. One of the seven mangers of Turkish Faculties of Architecture attending the meeting, Prof. Dr. Derya Oktay conducted inspections at the Bordeaux-Euratlantique urban transformation zone which was designed as a great metropolis and is home to works of renowned architects.
