TUBA Science Education Program Held at OMU

The Sixth "Applied Science Education Course", developed for the teachers of basic sciences under the cooperation protocol signed by the Ministry of National Education (MoNE) in 2015, is held at Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMU) within the scope of Science Education Program of TUBA (Turkish Academy of Sciences).

Before the opening ceremony held at the Faculty of Education, Prof. Ahmet Cevat Aca Head of TUBA, Prof. Mustafa Safran, Member of the Supervisory Board of the Higher Education Council, and İlkay Aydın, Head of the Department of Research and Development Projects in the General Directorate of Teacher Training and Development in the MoNE visited Rector Prof. Sait Bilgiç in his office. Rector Bilgic expressed his pleasure with the visit and he presented the gifts of the university to his guests. Prof. Ahmet Cevat Acar, Head of TUBA, also presented a book to Rector Bilgiç.

This intensive program will be organized under different titles such as Nature of Science, Insect Ecology and Land Study, Dynamic Mathematics, A Different View to Newton and Einstein's Law of Gravitation, History and Values Education and Nanotechnological Approaches in Chemistry Education; and the program aimed to develop teachers' competences for establishing more effective communication with their students in the field of physics, chemistry, mathematics, biology, science and history and to improve their evidence-based teaching skills.

The Education Program held in the Conference Hall of the Faculty of Education at OMU started with the opening speeches of Prof. Mustafa Safran, Executive Officer of TUBA Science Education Program, Full Member of TUBA and Member of YOK Supervisory Board, İlkay Aydın,Head of the Department of Research and Development Projects in the General Directorate of Teacher Training and Development in the MoNE, Rector Prof. Sait Bilgiç and Head of TUBA Prof. Ahmet Cevat Acar. The opening ceremony was held with the participation of Prof. Dursun Ali Akbulut, the Dean of the Faculty of Education, Coşkun Esen, Provincial Director of National Education, academicians and teachers.

“Communication between teacher and student should have an applied structure”

Prof. Mustafa Safran, Executive Officer of TUBA Science Education Program, Full Member of TUBA and Member of YOK Supervisory Board, gave the first speech of the program, and he emphasized that he knew the difficulties of teaching profession as an academician who was once a teacher.

Prof. Safran stated that they collaborated with the universities within the scope of these projects, and that they used the laboratories in campus. He also remarked that they worked with 65 academicians from 24 universities, and he underlined that the physical sciences were not disciplines to be loved with theoretical information.

“We should make demands in line with the needs of the schools”

İlkay Aydın, Head of the Department of Research and Development Projects in the General Directorate of Teacher Training and Development in the MoNE, gave his speech afterwards and he expressed that the main objective of teachers and educators is to train good and qualified students who will protect our country and nation and defend our values.

Rector Sait Bilgiç said: "Any system and any society that does not give importance to human beings, which is the main element in education, cannot bring itself to the future in a healthy and strong way". He also expressed that the world was in the process of rapid change and transformation, and that it should be ready for these changes. Drawing attention to the fact that the truths in science may be falsified over time, Rector Bilgiç also remarked that it was possible to have a continuous development and advancement in science by means of humankind's curiosity and doubt.

Rector Prof. Bilgiç underlined that teachers left very important and lasting traces in our lives, and he emphasized that being role models with their posture and behavior is an essential aspect of the healthy development of students.

Prof. Ahmet Cevat Acar, the Head of TUBA, gave the last speech of the program and he emphasized that Turkey achieved a significant growth in the number of buildings, teachers and students, the schooling rate, the funds allocated for education and the capacity of the budget, but also that we could not show the same growth and development in terms of the quality of education and its outputs.

The trainings started in the Faculty of Education at OMU on September 11 within the scope of Applied Science Education Course, and they continued until September 15.

Prof. Ahmet Cevat Acar, the Head of TUBA, Prof. Mustafa Safran, the Member of YOK Supervisory Board and Rector Prof. Sait Bilgiç also visited Osman Kaymak, Governor of Samsun.
