The ordinary meeting of the general assembly of Samsun Teknopark (Samsun Technology Development Area) situated in the Ondokuz Mayıs University Campus was held at the Teknopark Meeting Hall.

Arriving at the Teknopark before the meeting alongside Vice Rector Prof. Mehmet Kuran, Rector Prof. Sait Bilgiç visited and inspected the units accompanied by Technology Transfer Office Head (OMÜ-TTO) Prof. Ömer Andaç and Teknopark Board Chairman Asst. Prof. Özgür Demircan.

The meeting attended by Rector Prof. Sait Bilgiç, Samsun Deputy Governor Hasan Öztürk, Vice Rector Prof. Mehmet Kuran and members of the Administrative and Audit Board and stakeholders started after minute’s silence and the National Anthem.

Samsun Teknopark Administrative Board Deputy Chairman Asst. Prof. Özgür Demircan delivered the opening speech and addressing the stakeholders said “The seeds we spread in 2008 became saplings in 2010 and finally began giving its first fruits in July 2014. I believe our structure which sets an example for the cooperation between the public, university, industry and civil society today and the days to come with the mission we undertook as Samsun Teknopark, will make a great contribution to the growing and effectiveness of our center in the new operating cycle as well.”

Outstanding performance from Teknopark

Referring to the fact that the performances of Teknoparks are evaluated in accordance with activities they perform like R&D, establishment of incubators and technology transfers, Chairman Demircan summarized the performance of Samsun Teknopark with these words: “Samsun Teknopark has performed pretty well ranking 14th in 2016 according to the index data of 2015 among 39 teknoparks included in the index; and 3rd among 14 early phase teknoparks not older than 5 years and has been awarded as a result.

“Time and money should not be wasted”

Taking the stage next, Rector Prof. Sait Bilgiç stated that Teknoparks have a very serious role in the development of countries and said that the city’s expectations from Teknopark are high. Rector Bilgiç said that they give much importance to Teknopark in this regard and continued “You will see hopefully in the future that we spare more time to Teknopark and act more responsibly in this regard. The universities’ roles and expectations from them have changed. We are aware that, in order to meet the expectations, as OMU we should be actively involved in works which may transform into benefits both for Samsun and our country. Hence, we will focus and intensify our budget to certain areas. In this scope, we have to predict that the projects and activities we will spare budget for transform into benefits. In this manner, as an institution coming to everyone’s minds and show interest into, we want to get rid of works which don’t take into account the benefits and, as a result, where a lot of time and money is wasted; instead, we want to walk on a realistic path.

“Trio structure will pave the way for bigger projects”

Rector Bilgiç remarked that they applied to TÜBİTAK (the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey) of 500.000 TL for a starter project and stated that the project in question would be sort of an infrastructure development project to realize the projects of the Technology Transfer Office. Prof. Bilgiç added that with this trio structure formed with the support of the university, industry and country, the way for bigger projects each time will be paved and that this process will contribute to the competitiveness strength of both the region and the country.
