Organized under the leadership of Ondokuz Mayıs University Faculty of Science and Letters Physics Department, “Monte Carlo Applications of Wave and Particle Type Radiation (DPAR 2017) Winter School” workshop gathered participants from various universities at the Faculty of Science and Letters Conference Hall.

The opening of the workshop to be commenced between 25-27 January 2017 was attended by Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Vedat Ceyhan, Faculty of Science and Letters Dean Prof. Dr. Bekir Batı, Workshop Organization Board Head and teaching staff of the Physics Department Prof. Dr. Hasan Gümüş and academicians.

About 40 academicians and researchers from Turkey take part in the event also supported by the Scientific Research Projects (OMÜBAP), TÜBİTAK and Turkish Atomic Energy Authority (TAEK).

“We Received a Great Number of Applications”

Delivering the opening speech of the workshop, Prof. Dr. Hasan Gümüş stated that they received a great number of applications, which indicated that organizing the Winter School was a right decision and continued “There was already a need for this workshop. We hope our event will be productive and useful. We also believe that young scientists will meet through this event, communicate and interact with and support each other. We thank you all for coming and honoring us.

“Raising the Awareness and Sensitivity about Basic Sciences is a Must”

Stating that there has been a negative and highly inclined decline in the basic sciences education field in the last 40-50 years, Faculty of Science and Letters Dean Prof. Dr. Bekir Batı said “Nowadays, there is a significant decline in physics, chemistry, biology and mathematics disciplines. Without a doubt, this is highly saddening and we are sorry in this means. First of all, we expect both the rulers and also our society apprehend the importance and place of basic sciences. We need to understand this point: You cannot produce technology without first producing information, hence you cannot raise the welfare level to a higher point. We wish that the awareness and sensitivity about basic sciences rises. In this scope, much falls to us as well, we must relentlessly give voice to these and convince people”. Prof. Dr. Batı thanked especially Prof. Dr. Hasan Gümüş, who put much effort in the organization of the Winter School, the teaching staff of the Physics Department and the participants from various universities of Turkey who attended the event.

“Basic Sciences is a Treasure We are not Aware of”

Starting his speech saying “We are used to hear summer schools, but Winter School did not jar because of the warmth and quality of education, I guess”, Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Vedat Ceyhan continued “I am an agriculture economist. I got extremely excited when our reverend teacher shared this event with us, because I am not a stranger to the Monte Carlo method. I use Monte Carlo simulation while working on risk analysis and mathematical modeling. So, Basic Sciences is such a thing, a treasure we are unaware of. One day it serves you. Those particles come together all of a sudden and form the cell phones we use or can become an X-ray device in radiography. In short, behind this technology there is a very intense basic sciences and applied research and, consecutively, R&D, which we use a lot these days.

Prof. Dr. Ceyhan thanked everyone who put effort and contributed to the ripening and realization of the Winter School idea and stated that it made them utmost happy to be hosting such a workshop. He continued “I hereby deliver the kindest regards of our reverend Rector. He wishes that this workshop emerges successful and fruitful.”

The Winter School, which gathered together academicians and researchers studying on Monte Carlo simulation and will continue for 3 days, will create awareness with GEANT4, EGS and MCNP software educations to be given by experts of the field. As the number of academicians and researchers who use these softwares in our country is low, it is expected that the Winter School contribute to the cooperation and future studies among participants.

The participants will learn in the workshop, which will be carried out theoretically and applied, the general working principles of Monte Carlo codes which can simulate the basic interactions of accelerated subatomic particles and X and gamma rays within matter. In the Winter School, furthermore, providing trainings on particle interactions, the Monte Caro method and C# as the programming language, it will be contributed to the forming of the scientific substructure.

What is the Monte Carlo Method?

Monte Carlo is a simulation method used in the modeling of stochastic events. Nowadays, this method is used in common from mathematical numeric integration problems to the stochastic modeling of interest rates in economics. This method has been the irreplaceable analysis tool of physicists especially in the nuclear and particle physics applications and the field of medical physics, the design and analysis of expensive experiments, the design of detectors and several other fields.
