OMU Celebrated the New Academic Year Together With the President of TUBA

"2019-2020 Academic Year Opening Ceremony" of Ondokuz Mayıs University was held with the participation of Prof. Dr. Muzaffer Şeker, Head of Turkish Academy of Sciences (TUBA), and of Samsun protocol. As the guest of honor, President of TUBA Prof. Dr. Muzaffer Şeker, gave the opening course of the year with his presentation entitled "Academic Developments and Future Planning in Turkey".

The ceremony started with the placing of a wreath at the Atatürk Monument and then it continued at the Atatürk Congress and Culture Center. The ceremony was held with the participation of Samsun Governor Osman Kaymak, Samsun Deputy Ahmet Demircan, Samsun Mayor Mustafa Demir, Garrison Commander Artillery Colonel Recep Ali Üstün, OMU Rector Prof. Dr. Sait Bilgiç, Rector of Samsun University Prof. Dr. Mahmut Aydın, Rector of Gümüşhane University Prof. Dr. Halil İbrahim Zeybek, Kerami Gürbüz, President of Samsun Bar Association, Salih Zeki Murzioğlu, President of Samsun Chamber of Commerce and Industry, district governors, vice rectors, deans, administrators of public institutions, heads of provincial parties, heads of professional chambers, officials of civil society organizations, academicians and students.

The opening speech of the ceremony was made by Rector Prof. Dr. Sait Bilgiç as the hosting authority. Rector Bilgiç welcomed the guests and he remarked: "we are glad to celebrate the new academic year in the 100th anniversary of 19 May at OMU which carries the name of the day when the first steps for the foundation of the Republic of Turkey were taken with the burning of the liberation torch".

“OMU continues its way with the motivation to transfer more information into life”

Recalling that OMÜ has a 44-year history, Rector Sait Bilgiç said: "OMU, which started its life in 1975 as a sapling with the great efforts and contributions of people who have devoted themselves to education has been developing and serving since then by creating and implementing projects, accelerating research and development activities and with the motivation to transfer more information into life". In addition, he has pointed out that OMU carries out its esearch and development (R & D) and social service activities together with its 19 faculties, 6 institutes, 1 college, 1 state conservatory, 12 vocational schools, 22 research and application centers, 54 thousand students, approximately 6500 employees.

“Our goal is to be among the top 500 universities in the world ranking”

Referring to the quality process, Rector Sait Bilgiç said: “In 2019, we received the ISO 9001: 2015 Quality Management System Certificate as a part of the quality studies we initiated to facilitate our university's planned development, quality service delivery and sustainable improvements. We have also applied for a customer satisfaction certificate. Furthermore, the Quality Management System Software (PEN) has been completed and started to be used by our own software developers. Other modules are in progress."

“We want to be the first city establishing zero waste system”

Expressing his excitement for the ceremony, Mustafa Demir, Mayor of Samsun Metropolitan Municipality, said: "I greet you all with respect and love on this occasion. OMÜ has a great effort in its 44-year history . In addition to information and communication technologies, we are performing very effective studies together with OMU in other fields. Our friends carry out joint works especially in the zero waste project. Hopefully, we aim to be the city that completes and establishes this zero waste system for the first time".

"We bring discount abonnement system for students”

Stating that OMU has combined its opportunities in a synchronized way with the public institution and society, Mayor Mustafa Demir continued: "Hopefully, we will give a world-class library to our university for our youth and Samsun. We are always in need of cooperation with the university. We are planning to intoduce a discount abonnement system for transportation in the coming months. Not only our students, but also our faculty and staff will benefit from this system. ”

“We are proud of the achievements of OMU"

Ahmet Demircan, Samsun Deputy and former Minister of Health, pointed out that Samsun's identity of university city became more visible with the success of OMU and the establishment of Samsun University. Demircan also stated: “Samsun is on its way to becoming a university city. Our second university, Samsun University, started its activities.I believe there will be wonderful results .”

"Our students will contribute to the development of our country by receiving education ”

Samsun Governor Osman Kaymak said, “Samsun is a city of education. We are proud of the achievements of our university. We have about 240 thousand students in secondary education and 60,000 university students in Samsun. These 300 thousand students will contribute to the development of our country by receiving education. The foundations of the Republican National Struggle were set in Samsun 100 years ago and this process is not over. Because this geography is not an easy geography. We have to be strong against the political games. We have to produce more and keep pace with the world. In this process, the biggest responsibility belongs to our universities. Your future studies and your graduate students will strengthen Turkey's power."

"We have to balance graduate education and doctorate education ”

President of TUBA Prof. Dr. Muzaffer Şeker gave the opening course of the new academic year with his presentation entitled "Academic Developments and Future Planning in Turkey", and he remarked: “In academic education, we need to measure, evaluate and define our statistical data realistically. If we look at the higher education in Turkey there is an imbalance between graduate education and doctorate education. We observe that graduate education is more emphasized than PhD studies. This is the problem that should be solved by us, in other words, academicians, and we have to create a balance in this field".

Science and encouragement awards were given to their owners

In the ceremony, which continued with the distributions of the awards of science and encouragement, Rector Prof. Dr. Sait Bilgiç and Deputy of Samsun Ahmet Demircan gave together the award of Erasmus + Mundus Master in Soil Science (emiSS)]to Prof. Dr. Rıdvan Kızılkaya. The ceremony ended after the distribution of all awards.
